Goodbye to showers and bathtubs, welcome to “people washing machines”: this is what this revolutionary invention is like

Showers

This modern and futuristic household appliance was presented at the 2025 Expo in Osaka.

The bathroom as we know it could have its days numbered. Although it may seem like science fiction, a “people washing machine” has been developed that could revolutionise and transform hygiene. Although it is not currently being marketed on a large scale, this invention could end up being an alternative to traditional showers and bathtubs in a few years’ time, marking a turning point in personal hygiene.

This type of appliance was already presented years ago at the 1970 Osaka Expo, where a Japanese company showcased its “ultrasonic bath”, a washing machine that cleaned, massaged and dried the occupant in a fully automated 15-minute cycle, but it never really took off as a commercial product. Now, at the Osaka Expo 2025, the company Science has presented its own modernised version and allowed visitors to try it out.

Goodbye To Showers And Bathtubs, Welcome To “People Washing Machines”: This Is What This Revolutionary Invention Is Like

What is this “people washing machine” like?

It is called the Mirai Ningen Sentakki, a name that translates into English as “human washing machine of the future”. In it, the capsule itself begins to fill with water mixed with soap and becomes a kind of bathtub. At the moment of bathing, the user can enjoy a totally relaxing experience, as images of the sea or incredible landscapes begin to play on its interior screen.

Also equipped with devices that play relaxing sounds and music, the water begins to drain away as soon as the bath is finished. To keep it clean, it also has water jets that remove any remaining soap. Although there are no plans to market it at the moment, the company will manufacture a few units for hotels and spas.
