Toilets without windows: 4 practical solutions to prevent unpleasant odours

Toilets

A small room without windows? Forget air fresheners, which only mask unpleasant odours. Natural absorbent products, homemade deodorising pebbles. Our 4 tips to keep your toilet fresh every day!

Ensure good ventilation

In a windowless toilet, the first line of defence against unpleasant odours is good ventilation. If your home already has a CMV, check that it is working properly and is not clogged. Simply cleaning the grilles can significantly improve suction.

Don’t have a CMV? The solution is to install an air extractor, such as this AIROPE-100 mm model. Connected to a switch, it removes stale air in just a few minutes!

Opt for natural absorbent products

An essential for household cleaning, bicarbonate of soda, such as this Paulette bicarbonate, works wonders. Sprinkled at the bottom of the toilet bowl or placed in a small dish behind the flush, it quickly absorbs unpleasant odours.

Activated charcoal acts as a natural filter. A few pieces placed in an open pot or cotton bag will retain bad odours for several weeks. You can also find pre-made charcoal bags here.

White vinegar is also very effective. Used in a spray, it neutralises the compounds responsible for bad odours. Add a few drops of essential oils to make it smell better!

Bring a touch of freshness to the room

Essential oils are great for toilets without windows. A few drops of lemon, lavender or eucalyptus on a cotton pad or porous material will give off a subtle, pleasant scent.

Be careful to use them sparingly, though! They can cause allergic reactions or irritate the respiratory tract.

Another eco-friendly and economical product that can be used without moderation is a homemade deodorising tablet. Make it with bicarbonate of soda, citric acid and essential oils. Once placed in the bowl, it will release a subtle fragrance every time the toilet is flushed.

Toilets Without Windows: 4 Practical Solutions To Prevent Unpleasant Odours

Maintain your toilet regularly

Good hygiene is the key to an odour-free toilet. The bowl, cistern and flush should be cleaned at least once a week to prevent limescale and bacteria build-up.

The combination of hot white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda is very effective at dissolving limescale deposits.

Often overlooked, the toilet brush should also be disinfected regularly to prevent it from becoming a source of unpleasant odours.

Finally, empty the small bin frequently and clean the floor around the toilet to maintain a healthy environment!
