Around thirty people stung by hornets
During the ‘La Maraîchère’ race, which brought together around a hundred participants, around thirty people were stung by hornets.
The insects were probably disturbed by the runners, according to our colleagues at France Bleu.
Seven people sought help from the emergency services at the scene and three, a 29-year-old woman and two men aged 36 and 64, had to be taken to hospital as a precaution.
Two of these participants had an allergic reaction, according to Actu.
They hadn’t seen the insects
The race marshals immediately diverted the route, according to France Bleu. According to the event organiser, who was himself stung, no one had spotted the swarm of hornets when marking out the race route.
The insects had taken up residence in the tree trunks of the forest through which the runners passed, the organiser said.
‘We would like to apologise for the unexpected presence of the hornets. We did everything we could to secure the area as quickly as possible, but around 30 of you were stung, including two who were more seriously affected due to allergies, and we are truly sorry,’ said the organisers in a statement.
