Conditioning

Juan José, a mechanic from Seville, warns against turning off the air conditioning.

In one of his posts this summer, this Seville-based expert made a recommendation about turning off the car when the air conditioning is on.

In the summer months, car air conditioning is essential when driving, as it allows the temperature inside the passenger compartment to drop in order to avoid future risks at the wheel.

However, it is necessary to take a series of precautions when using it to avoid damaging it, as explained by Juan José, the renowned mechanic from Talleres Ebenezer, in one of his TikTok videos. The expert recommends not turning off the car if the air conditioning is still on and says that it is better to turn off the cooler first.

Why can it be harmful to stop the car with the air conditioning on?

Juan José specifies that ‘the car does not understand when it is stopping’, i.e. the mechanic adds that when the engine is turned off, the air conditioning is not in the ‘stop position’ but in ‘operation’ mode.

Therefore, according to the expert: ‘The compressor will continue to have inertia and force, as will the auxiliary belt, which will continue to drive it.’ For this reason, Juan José indicates that we must remove this load before stopping the vehicle, which will ultimately prevent damage to the air conditioning system and avoid future breakdowns.

What are the most common air conditioning faults?

Firstly, the system may have a fault related to the refrigerant gas, either because the necessary amount is not circulating due to a leak in the tank or in the pipes. It is also common for the fuse responsible for supplying power to the air conditioning to fail.

In addition, obstructions may occur in the air filters, preventing the air from flowing properly into the vehicle. Finally, a common fault is with the air conditioning compressor; if this stops working, the gas will not turn into liquid and, as a result, the air circulating through the ducts will not cool down.

How can the above faults be repaired?

Most of the problems mentioned above are usually due to poor vehicle maintenance and inadequate cleaning of the air conditioning system.

It is therefore essential to visit a garage before the summer to have a full inspection of the air conditioning carried out, checking the components that could cause these common faults, such as the external air intakes, the refrigerant gas level, the fuses, the expansion valve and the ducts.
