A sewing trick for beginners, very simple and requiring few materials.

There are many home tricks, craft techniques and natural tools that can be used at home to solve various problems. In particular, a sewing trick is one of those inexpensive and quick techniques that can be used to repair clothes, design garments from scratch at home or recover old scraps.

Today I am going to share a little thread trick with you so that you can make beautiful covers for your mobile phone charger or headphones at home, using old fabric and a little thread. This trick is perfect for preventing cables from getting tangled, broken or damaged.

Sewing is a great home activity for motor skills, imagination and self-esteem.

With a trick: how to sew cases for your mobile phone charger and headphones

To do this sewing trick for your mobile phone, you will need: two small rectangles of fabric approximately 15 cm long by 8 cm wide; scissors, thread, a needle, a button or Velcro, whatever you have at home.

You can use any small scrap of fabric you have at home.

  1. To begin this trick, serge the edges of the fabric to prevent fraying.
  2. Place the fabric right sides together and sew a straight seam around all the edges, leaving a small hole unsewn to turn the piece inside out.
  3. Turn the fabric inside out, leaving the right side exposed. Sew the hole closed and sew a straight seam half a centimetre from the edge all around the rectangle to make it neater.
  4. At this point in the trick, you have two options: use buttons or use Velcro. If you are going to use buttons, sew a small one on one end of the rectangle and make a buttonhole on the other end to thread the button through. If you are going to use Velcro, place one piece on one end of the piece and the other on the other end, but on the opposite side so that you can fasten it around the cable.

Once the cover is ready, you can use it for mobile phone chargers or to store headphones, as shown in the photo. A cheap, simple trick that you can do with old scraps of fabric that you have stored at home.

A trick and something more: 4 common sewing mistakes you can avoid

Sewing materials and fabrics will determine the final result of each thread trick.

  1. Using the wrong needle for a sewing trick or project can damage the fabric. Always use the correct size needles, the thinnest for thin fabrics and the thickest for sturdy fabrics.
  2. Washing clothes after sewing them is a big mistake. It is best to soak and dry the fabrics before making the trick, in case it shrinks a little.
  3. Using poor quality thread can be a problem. Over time, the thread can wear out or break.
  4. Not testing on old fabric and practising your sewing before you start is a serious mistake. Always check that your machine is working properly.
